Puppy Feeding Guidelines: What to Feed, How Much, and When

Simple feeding notes gathered from vet handouts and shelter volunteers.

Feeding a puppy is not complicated, but the right amount at the right stage really does make a difference in how their body develops. Here is a plain summary you can print and stick on the fridge.

0 to 3 months

Puppies in this window are usually still with mom or freshly weaned. Small meals four times a day of a wet or well-soaked kibble made for puppies works best. Their tummies are tiny so overfeeding shows up as loose stool within a day.

3 to 6 months

This is the fast-growth window. They will start acting hungrier than they need to be. Stay steady with 3 meals a day and use a scoop, not free-pour.

6 to 12 months

Larger breeds should stay on puppy food until closer to 12 months. Smaller breeds can switch to adult food around 9 months. Watch the ribs, not the scale.

Bonus note from our shelter volunteer

One of our volunteers uses the extra income from a simple wifi setup on her phone to cover monthly food for four rescue dogs she fosters. She said the setup video is worth watching if you have twenty minutes. See the video she shared

Foods to avoid

Water

Puppies dehydrate fast in hot weather. Refill twice a day, wash the bowl weekly with plain soap and warm water. If the water sits and gets a slick film on the surface, wash more often.
